Football and Piano in Harmony

So many times I hear of boys making the choice between dropping their sporting interest (generally football) or dropping piano lessons. Sadly for us piano teachers – most choose to do the latter.

Among those dropping piano lessons for this reason was my husband. He remembers feeling pressurised by friends who would say sneeringly: “Piano?! What are you doing that for? Come and play footie with us instead.” So he did.

It was refreshing, therefore, to read an article in yesterday’s Daily Mirror about Manchester City footballer Raheem Sterling who has not only bought a £10,000 piano – but is also investing in piano lessons. This just goes to show that football and piano-playing need not be mutually exclusive.

I just hope Raheem Sterling spreads the word to young football fans that taking piano lessons is actually a pretty cool thing to do.
