I’ve just discovered that it’s National Piano Month (… a bit late in the day as it’s the 25th already!). I’m not sure whether the UK marks this occasion but it is certainly celebrated in the USA – most notably by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
If, like me, you are unable to travel to this museum, it’s definitely worth taking a look at Celebrating National Piano Month part one and part two.
There is plenty of information here (including the fact that the piano was invented around 1700 – which I’m sure I should have known already, but didn’t) as well as photos of some unusually shaped and very beautiful pianos.
Also marking National Piano Month, is a competition being run by Alfred Music and Making Music Magazine. The prize is Alfred’s Teach Yourself to Play Piano Complete Starter Pack (not that I’m a great believer in teaching yourself to play the piano of course!) The package includes an electronic keyboard, book, cd and dvd. For more details visit Music Teachers Helper.
