I recently received the results for my younger son’s grade 8 ABRSM piano exam – 125 Merit. I was absolutely thrilled – as was he.
However, I do have slightly mixed feelings as – having seen both sons through their 8 piano grades – this now feels like the end of an era. No more weeks of nagging over imperfect scales or 10-minute morning practices which should have been twice as long. But – at the same time – no more feelings of intense joy, relief and pride on receiving the results.
There is one big bonus though … both my (teenage) sons’ lessons are now a far more enjoyable and relaxed experience. Touch wood, both of them are still willing to continue the ‘lessons’ with me (more of a run-through of what they can do really, rather than me actually ‘teaching’ them) – and are both happy to play voluntarily.
I suppose it’s this – rather than passing grade 8 – which is the greatest achievement.
